Berlin’s perfect wave

(c) Wellenwerk / Julius Niehus

Riding the waves in Berlin? With no nearby sea, that’s surely nothing but a dream. Since the end of November, accomplished and aspiring wave-riders can showcase their skills or take the plunge at the heritage-protected grounds of Prenzlauer Berg’s older pumping station.

At a constant 25 degrees Celsius, the beach feeling is real, and thanks to citywave® technology, Germany’s widest (8.50 metres) and the world’s highest (1.60 metres) indoor wave is a hit with beginners and pros alike – no matter what Berlin’s winter weather is currently doing. The Wellenwerk is also climate-friendly, because all of its electricity is hydroelectric and, using an innovative heat recuperator, supplies warmth to the water in the 18 m pool and the whole hall, as well as some neighbouring buildings.

The wave can be surfed with surfboards and bodyboards, and an optional grab bar provides the support needed by beginners and the physically disadvantaged. You can rent the equipment you need at the venue. Surf for an hour, including equipment and coaching, for just €39.90 (plus €2.00 eco-power surcharge). The Wellenwerk offers fun and training facilities in the middle of the city. No weather-watching and no sharks…
